Firm

Tymoff+Moss Architects was founded in 1995. John Tymoff and Barry Moss, former president and vice-president of one of the largest firms in Virginia, started their new firm with an open studio concept that fosters collaborative design efforts, creativity, and excellent communication.

Tymoff+Moss Architects involve each client throughout the entire design process. Using an explorative approach to problem solving, the entire team—architects, clients, consultants, and, very often, contractors—search for the best design to meet each project's specific goals and needs.

This open process has resulted in many outstanding buildings and has garnered the firm with over a dozen design awards. More than eighty percent of the firm's work is through repeat clients. This attests not only to excellent design but to its execution within a client's budget and schedule.

Tymoff+Moss was founded on the belief that it is better to do one project exceptionally well rather than several projects ordinarily. By limiting the number of projects, both John and Barry are involved with every project from start to finish.

The firm focuses on educational and civic work. K-12 public schools, private schools and campuses, university and college projects, and both public and academic libraries have made up the majority of the firm's work. Distinguished commercial, medical, and residential projects have also been successfully completed over the past fifteen years.

Tymoff+Moss Architects office is located in the historic Freemason District of downtown Norfolk, Virginia. The office is an adaptive reuse of a 1930s gas station. The building is filled with natural light. Original brick and steel were left exposed and contrast with the new white display walls. The open office plan fosters excellent communication within the office, allowing everyone to participate in all phases of a project. It is an ideal place to design.

U.S. Green Building Council MemberThe firm is currently pursuing LEED™ certification for the building. Tymoff+Moss Architects is committed to sustainable design principles. "Green" design elements have always been incorporated into their projects. The firm is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and over half of the staff is LEED™ Certified.
